The archaeological site of Pompeii covers about 66 hectares, of which 44 excavated, and allows you to visit about 1500 different buildings brought to light, divided between domus and monuments.
Due to its extension, it is advisable to book a guided tour, to optimize the visit without forgetting the main monuments and to buy the ticket in advance at this link to skip the line.
It is open every day of the year except January 1st, May 1st and December 25th and has three different entrances:
Porta Marina entrance, near the circumvesuviana stop;
Entrance of P.za Esedra, at the motorway exit;
Entrance of P.za Anfiteatro, towards the modern city.
In the summer period (i.e. from 1 April to 31 October) the opening hours range from 8.30 to 19.30 while in the winter the site closes at 17.00. The best time to visit is in spring and autumn when temperatures are mild and the site is not too crowded.
It is possible to purchase both the entrance ticket only and the guided tour in a group or with a private guide with an archaeologist.
