It's official: the extraordinary Piscina Mirabilis, the largest freshwater cistern of the Roman era ever found in the entire Western Empire, is reopening to the public. After a year of work and restoration, this ancient engineering masterpiece will finally be visitable again from May 31, along with the suggestive Cento Camerelle and the Prisons of the Aragonese Castle of Baia.
A historic event for the whole Campania region, marking the rebirth of one of the symbolic places of the archaeological heritage of the Phlegraean Fields. As stated by the mayor of Bacoli, Josi Gerardo Della Ragione:
"It is an extraordinary achievement for Bacoli. A driving force for the development of the Phlegraean Fields, Naples, Campania, and beyond."
An itinerary among the submerged treasures of history
To celebrate the reopening, the Archaeological Park of the Phlegraean Fields has organized a guided walk in the historic center of Bacoli, starting at 4:30 pm from the Cento Camerelle and walking to the Piscina Mirabilis: a unique journey through archaeology, nature, and beauty.
Thanks to the joint work of the Archaeological Park and CoopCulture, visits will now be possible every week, for several days, making this site finally accessible to everyone, with increased safety and visitor services.
