Pompeii gives us a new emotion: thanks to the work of the Office for the Protection of Archaeological Heritage of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, a precious archaeological artifact has returned to Italy and will be exhibited at the Antiquarium of Pompeii for public enjoyment.
A return that tastes like historical justice and that shines the spotlight once again on a timeless place, where history comes to life among the streets and temples of the ancient Roman city.
An artifact "child of Vesuvius" returns home
The artifact, coming from the Vesuvius area but without certain data on its original discovery context, has been returned thanks to the commitment of the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage.
According to the director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, "every looted artifact that returns is a wound that heals." The wound concerns not only the material value but above all the loss of historical memory caused by the illicit traffic of antiquities.
Now, thanks to further studies and archaeometric analysis, efforts will be made to reconstruct the history of this artifact and symbolically return it to the community.
Where to see the artifact: at the Antiquarium of Pompeii
The artifact will be temporarily exhibited at the Antiquarium of Pompeii, a space dedicated to visitors that tells the story of the city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.
In addition to the new finding, the Antiquarium houses a collection of extraordinary artifacts, mosaics, and frescoes that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the daily life of the ancient Pompeians.
