The Museum and Royal Park of Capodimonte has always been one of the must-see destinations for those visiting Naples, but today it becomes even more special thanks to the reopening of the Princes' Garden, an authentic living monument that is finally accessible to the public after a year of work.
With its 134 hectares of historic park, the Garden has been returned to the city and international visitors as one of the most fascinating examples of nineteenth-century landscaping. The inauguration on June 4, 2025, presided over by the Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli, was celebrated with music, nature, and the promise of a new season of cultural and environmental enhancement.
A nineteenth-century landscaping masterpiece
Conceived in 1840 by Friedrich Dehnhardt, then head gardener of the Royal Botanic Garden of Naples, the Princes' Garden reflects the Anglo-Chinese taste so popular at the time: sinuous groves, belvederes, and avenues that open up to enchanting scenarios, with Vesuvius dominating the horizon.
The restoration, funded through the PNRR, has brought back to life not only the historic paths now erased by vegetation, but also the original botanical and architectural elements. In the Princes' Garden alone, 62 trees, 2, 450 shrubs, and 2, 465 herbaceous plants have been planted, creating a regenerated ecosystem that looks to the future with a focus on environmental sustainability.
What to admire
Walking along the avenues, visitors can discover centuries-old specimens of extraordinary beauty, including:
🌳 an imposing Cedar of Lebanon,
🌿 an ancient Camphor tree,
🌳 a rare Mexican Swamp Cypress,
🌿 a River Red Gum,
as well as magnolias, cypresses, pines, and yews that enrich the groves.
A unique botanical landscape, capable of offering different emotions in every season, with the possibility of experiencing an immersive experience in contact with history, art, and nature.
